THE same noises were here that had been there that day, but the sky

was lighter, not the deep cobalt of autumn, and Peter could feel the

heartblood of the earth stirring in the spring air. He and Bodi were

kneeling in the leaf mold, naked and dripping in come, and Bodi

was sobbing in his arms.

Peter gentled him, shushed him, stroked his brown/blond hair

back from his face, and whispered that it was all right. He was

drenched in sweat, cooling in the spring shade, and Bodi was a hot,

salty mess against his chest and his shoulder. Peter wouldn’t have

moved him for the world.

Finally Bodi’s sobs eased and he pulled back, looking

embarrassed.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered one more time and finished on a

laugh as he wiped his face on the long-sleeved T-shirt he’d worn

under his denim jacket.

“Not as sorry as I am,” Peter told him, reaching out to cup his

heated face.

Bodi nodded and looked over his shoulder. “I’m going

swimming,” he said out of the blue. “I don’t give a shit how cold it

is. I’ve got to….”

He stood up then and started stripping, and Peter followed,

picking Bodi’s clothes up off the forest floor so he could leave them
